Required Attire For Entry Into Laboratories Where Hazardous Materials Are Used or Stored

Objective: 

To comply with University Executive Directive 15-42 by defining the minimum standards for required attire in laboratories where hazardous materials are used or stored, in order to provide the protections required by contract, statutes, and best laboratory practices.

Statement: 

Per University Executive Directive 15-42 the following attire is the minimum required for entry into laboratories where hazardous materials are used or stored:

• Knee length lab coats that cover the torso and arms
• Socks and closed-toe and heel shoes with heels less than 2.5 inches high
• Ankle-length pants or skirt
• Safety glasses with permanent side shields or a uni-lens reaching to the side of eyes

NOTE: Liquid-proof goggles should be readily available and worn whenever significant quantities of corrosive or highly toxic liquids are transferred.

Many common tasks, experiments, or areas will require additional or more protective apparel.

The University shall provide lab coats and protective eyewear for employees who must enter laboratories where hazardous materials are used or stored.

Students who are not paid employees of the University must provide their own lab coats and protective eyewear when taking classes in laboratories where hazardous materials are used or stored.

Visitors to laboratories where hazardous materials are used or stored must be provided with the required personal protective equipment if they are to enter the lab.

Disputes, problems, and requests for exemptions to the requirements of this Policy should be addressed in writing to the: Dean-College of Science and Engineering; University Chemical Safety Officer; and Director-Environment, Health, and Safety, who shall confer together in settling such issues.
